-Warning that there is a huge risk for conflict to rise again, the top UNHCR officiel, Antonio Guterres, on visit at the great Lake Region has called the international community to provide greater support for Congo.

March 9 2006

-President Joseph Kabila has promulgated the long-awaited electoral law. The approval of this law allows officials to start registering candidates, printing ballot papers and transporting them across the country. Presidential and legislative elections are due by June 30.

March 14 2006

-Uganda has stepped up monitoring of its border with the DRC after renewed clashes between Ugandan government forces and militias of the Allied Democratic Forces and of the People's Redemption Army.

-Preparations in order to deploy a European Union military mission to help secure the coming elections in Congo are going ahead.The final details wille be worked out on the occasion of the EU High Representative for the Common Forein and Security Policy Javier Solana's current visit in Kinshasa.

-President Joseph Kabila said he would stand as an independant candidate in the elections in June.

-UN chief Kofi Annan at his visit in Kinshasa said UN peacekeepers will not abandon Congo after this year's elections. The tendency in the past to treat elections as an exit strategy was a mistake. "One has to have the patience and stabilise the countries coming out of conflict and not rush out too soon", he said.

-Dissiddent gen. Laurent Nkunda has deployed his troops in Masisi (North-Kivu). MONUC announces to know his place, but don't arrest him.

March 29 2006

-Initially scheduled for 18 June, the first round of the presidential election combined with the legislative elections will have to be delayed. This is due to the need to allow candidates mote time to register, according to the Independent Electoral Commission.

March 30 2006

-Militia groups in Ituri district are swelling in numbers and on the offensive as attempts to disarem them fail, MONUC said.

-A month and a half ago, $ 700 million was pledged at the international conference of donors, but only one third of that amount has been provided. In Genva, the deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Congo, Ross Mountain, voiced his disappointment.

-Of the 73 candidates submitted for the presidential election, only 33 were validated by the Independent Electoral Commission. Those whose candidacies were retained include Joseph Kabila, and three former rebel leaders and now Vice Presidents, Ruberwa, Bemba and Zahidi Ngoma.

-The Minister of Defence, Onusumba, intends to have 12 integrated FARDC brigades operational in Mai. There are 6 centres for the integration in the national army of the former combatants, trained by SADC and European military.

April 12 2006

-The resurgence of insecurity witnessed in Bukavu (South Kivu) has been marked by growing tensions in the region. In less than two weeks 11 people have been killed, after being robbed and the perpetrators, some who were in military uniform, are still at large.

-Ugandan security forces have been angered following reports that Congolese MRC rebels in Ituri are now allies of the Ungandan rebels of the ADF.

-The president of the African Union Commission, Alpha Omar Konare, is expected in Kinshasa, The African Union seeks to become more involved in the electoral process in Congo.

April 19 2006

-The Independent Electoral Commission has published a provisional list of 9587 parliamentary candidates selected from 9898 applications received. The final list of eligible contenders for 500 National Assembly seats is due within 7 days, after validation by the Supreme Court.

April 20 2006

-Logistical delays, political squabbles and vestering violence are obstructing the polls, which are unlikely to occur before late July.

-It has been announced that the opening date for registration of candidates for provincial elections is set on 2 May.

April 26 2006

-Congo's army has turned to gold smuggling and militia disarmament programmes are failing in the northeast, setting back efforts to pacify the country before elections, officials said last week.

-"Making or Breaking the Peace", the latest briefing from the International Crisis Group, analyses the approaching elections and warns that missteps could disrupt the fragile peace. There is potential for electoral fraude, parties are relatively weak, and the main opposition group UDPS plans to boycott. Dissidents from the RCD in the east could try to fuel chaos in North Kivu.

-MONUC said that reports of a Ugandan army raid into Congo were credible after peacekeepers conducted a verification mission in the remote northeastern border region.

May 2 2006

-The Catholic Church makes its voice heard in the DRC. The president of the National Episcopal Conference, Monsengwo, denounces the absence of consultations within the political class. The first round will take place on 30 July 2006, which means after the expiration of the current transition period. Monsengwo's criticism is also directed at the international community, when he describes the Congolese government as being subjugated to foreign powers.

May 8 2006

-Close to 200 Mayi-Mayi fighters have surrendered with their weapons to MONUC in north and central Katanga.

May 9 2006

-The IMF is to withhold the last installment of its funding plan for the DRC because of failures in the country's economic/financial reform program. "The forthcoming elections are one of the parameters for the conclusion of the new deal with the IMF", Finance Minister Banguli said.

May 12 2006

-The Great Lakes Region private section has endorsed a proposal for the certification of natural resources products originating from the region. This would help combat illegal exploitation of the DRC's natural resources with the added benefit of stemming the prevalence of conflict.

-Mayi-Mayi warlord Kyungu Mutanga, alias Gedeon, surrendered in Mitwaba in province Katanga and has expressed his wish to be integrated into the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegrations process.

-The Congolese parliament is currently considering a draft law on the independence of the magistracy.

May 16 2006

-According to Jan Egeland, the UN Under Seccretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Congo could replunge into the abyss of conflict. Aid destined for Congo, he says, remains dramatically underfunded.
